Getting a Grant From Uncle Sam

The word "free" in reference to free government grants is a misnomer. While you can get a free grant from Uncle Sam, you will have to spend a lot of time, effort and money to apply for one.

The proposal you make must be made by an expert and very often organizations have someone like this on their staff or they have to hire freelancers, either of which can be expensive. There are definitely some national grant secrets you will need to know to make a successful application.

Even if you do have a really great proposal, it is no guarantee that you will get the funding. Furthermore, someone will have to be paid to administer the spending of the grant money according to the proposal failing which you could attract penalties.

You can apply online for the programs that are related to your projects. The Department of Health was awarded $20 million by the Congress for the prevention of cancer so if you or your organization have a project related to that, you can apply for part of that funding.

You can apply for funding from various other federal agencies. If you're a student, you can apply for a Federal Pell Grant. If you're in agriculture, you can get funds to purchase land or equipment. If you're a builder or a developer, money is available to remodel or rehabilitate certain urban or rural areas. Again, knowing some national grant secrets would definitely be a plus.

There are literally thousands of these programs available. All it takes is a little diligence to research which one is right for you and the know-how to make the application.

Home Energy Grants- Find free cash for your home

Home Energy Grants- Find free cash for your home

Free cash to help pay for utility arrears

As well as grants to make your home more energy efficient, some utility companies also offer help if you have large arrears on your gas, electricity or water bills. Please let us know if you have success with any of these schemes.

Energy

Three providers offer an Energy Trust scheme for their account holders in hardship, to help cover energy arrears and sometimes other essential household items. Essential items are covered by Further Assistance Payments and can include white goods, boiler repairs or funeral costs. Those who live in a home supplied by the provider, but are not account holders, can apply for the Further Assistance Payments only.

You need to complete a full income and expenditure budget sheet along with proof of your income, give details on how your arrears have built up, eg, due to illness or redundancy, and say how the grant will help you. It can take several weeks to process your claim but can give £1,000+ in support.

For other providers or general advice, Homeheat is a not-for-profit phone line that gives advice on grants (both for energy arrears and insulation), benefits, reduced tariffs, special payment options and energy saving tips to people struggling to pay their bills and keep warm. You can call 0800 33 66 99 or check the Homeheat website for info.

Also see the Cheap Gas & Electricity guide.

Water

The Water UK website has info on all the water company schemes. Help from all providers includes WaterSure (see below), referrals to hardship funds and help in applying for direct payment from benefits (Water Direct).

If you're on a meter and a means tested benefit, and either have three or more children under the age of 19 or someone in the household with a medical condition needing lots of water, you could get help from theWaterSure scheme which caps your bills at the average bill for your area.

Some providers also offer other special tariffs and/or New Start/Restart (name depends on where you live), a scheme that can match payments or write off some of your debt if you enter an arrears payment plan.

Also see the Cut Water Bills guide.

Phone

Some means-tested benefits recipients (eg, income support, iESA, iJSA and pension credit) can get BT's special basic tariff for £14.40/quarter (rather than per month).

The package includes £4.50 worth of calls to landlines and free weekend calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers up to 60 minutes, although it can be costly after (10.7p a minute, plus 3.1p for each phone call, for normal calls).

The tariff lets you make and receive calls and stops certain calls being made, eg, mobile or premium rate numbers. You can also call to check your bill amount at any time, or check online, all helping to keep costs down and budget for your bills.

Also see the Cheap Home Phones guide.

Quick Stats: Who can apply? Anyone with utility arrears, usually a customer of the provider. What's the maximum award? Varies. What does it cover? Repayment of arrears and some household items.

Worrying About Time

An Excerpt from Creating Time by Marney Makridakis

Try this: Imagine who you would be if you didn’t worry about time. How might your life be different? I surveyed fifty-two people, and the results revealed that 90percent felt “somewhat anxious” to “significantly anxious” about time. What’s even more startling is that these results don’t even seem all that surprising. Anxiety about time is very much a part of most of our lives. Think back to a time when you greeted a casual acquaintance and asked how he was, and he said, “Great! Things are fantastic!” It can be almost jarring when someone responds so positively. Somehow we’re more conditioned to expect to hear people complain that they are tired, or sigh that they are busy.
It’s helpful to dig deeply to figure out what is at the root of our problems with time. Why do we overschedule ourselves? Why do we want to be so busy? Why are we so consumed with time? Why does it seem so “normal” to worry about time so much? Why is it easier to be caught up in a drama about time than it is to be released from it?
In short, what is the payoff for worrying about time?
When I examine this question myself, I can recognize that the more I complain about time, the more I block my ability to accept and express love and connection. Violette Clark shared, “I suppose not having enough time, or the illusion of believing this, makes us feel important. I also realize it keeps me safe. There have been a lot of dreams that I’ve accomplished, including publishing a book, but there have been a lot of balls that I’ve dropped, too, in the name of ‘not having enough time.’ Putting myself out there more fully means more potential for rejection. Sometimes not ‘going for my dreams’ is safer.”
Similarly, artist Peggy Lynn boldly admitted that time complaints are related to ego: “The ‘I’m too busy’ implication does stroke the ego: ‘Oh, look at me — busy, busy, busy!’” A workshop participant shared that her worries about time give her an excuse and an outside source for not following her dreams. She said, “I’ve never been someone who likes to blame, but now I suddenly realize that I’ve actually been blaming time. I don’t have enough time, and so that’s why I don’t go after this dream, or that’s why I haven’t tried this or followed up on that. Then it’s not my fault. This was a big discovery for me!

Here are some examples of payoffs that people might receive from worrying or complaining about time.
  • Time is a good catchall: if I can complain about being busy, then I don’t have to look at other areas in my life.
  • Worrying about time gives me something to talk about with other people.
  • Worrying about time is a convenient excuse for not following my dreams.
  • My schedule is wrapped up with my self-esteem. Being “too busy” means that I’m successful.
  • I don’t plan things that I might enjoy because it is too scary — it just feels safer to be bored.
Do any other payoffs come to mind? Which ones resonate as possibly being true for you? For further reflection, refer to the questions in the sidebar “Exploring Your Time Anxiety.”
Once we can identify the payoffs that we get from worrying about time, we can see them for what they are: illusions that keep us from living our true potential. Simply being aware of what we are getting from our time worries allows us to make a different choice. Choice is one of the nine ARTbundance Principles, which are building blocks to self-awareness. Making new choices is one of the best ways we can explore new layers of freedom with time. Dana Sebastian-Duncan, a trainee in the ACT program, put it nicely: “When I really think of the Principle of Choice as it relates to time, it reminds me that I have the freedom to create my life and my own ‘reality.’ My daily choices add up to my life, and that is empowering.”
